Took the bike for its MOT on Tuesday as it was my day off. It passed with flying colours so I'm very happy. I got talking to the tester about what a pain to start the bike is, as I don't ride it as much as I'd like.
He recommended some stuff called STA-BIL
I'm very dubious about fuel additives as you can't really see if its doing any good
You put 10ml in every 10L of fuel, must be fresh fuel though, not month old stuff, and it makes the fuel stay fresh indefinitely.
He sold a bottle to a CBR900 rider 7 years ago, a week later this rider was out with his mate and saw him go under a lorry, he got home and put the bike in the garage and vowed to never ride again.

2 weeks ago he fitted a new battery to the bike and tried to turn it over, it fired up first press of the button, he's had to overhaul his brakes and change the oil and filter, but the petrol was as fresh as can be. He passed his MOT and had his carbs checked and they were still in perfect balance.
The MOT tester is as honest as they come and wouldn't sell any crap, so I got a bottle of the stuff.
It even cleans old gum and varnish from the carbs while you ride too
A bottle should do around 7 tank fulls, so I you lay your bike up for Christmas, you should get around 7/8 years out if 1 bottle.
Not bad for a tenner is it

Often wonered about using something like that but just never bothered, i just drain the tank every 3 months or so and replace with fresh, old stuff goes in the car, job done.

Just a bit concerned with your maths, Guyver. "A bottle should do around 7 tank fulls". I can do that in a couple of months, not 7 years Unless of course, you only do 150 miles a year

I have things with engines that I have to store for extended periods of time each year - motorcycles, snow blower, lawn tractor, lawn mower, etc. etc. and I use Stabil in each tank when I store them. I don't think it cleans the carbs or anything like that, but it does keep the fuel from going off during the 5 or 6 months that the engine doesn't run.
I have periodically used an additive called Sea Foam in a tank of gas as it seems to have some ability to clean carb's internals.
I have had folks claim great results from using ChemTool B12 for actually cleaning carbs (full strength for cleaning when apart, and a small dose to clean while running) however, I have not been able to locate this additive here in Canada.

hot soapy water cleans the carbs Lights use the dishwasher you cheapskate, then they come out dry as well on 'pan' setting its brilliant for getting the old grease off you chain.

Les, I'm assuming that you consult with SWMBO before commiting carbs or a chain to her dishwasher. Who knows what damage they could suffer due to the trashings of the washer. ;D

I put all my tools in the dishwasher once. They came out lovely and clean, but I had to spend an afternoon cleaning all the oil residue away from the insides of the machine. Mrs B was not amused
