Need a new jacket got a Buffalo textile jacket at the moment and it is ripping on every pocket ,every zip and the lining is rotting ,its only about year & 1/2 old I have tried a Hein Gericke textile which was light and cool to wear.Having never had a leather bike jacket so just wondering about your opinion as i do tend to over heat would leather aggravate the situation :sunny:

I got both, wouldnt be without me leather jacket and padded leather jeans, i dont get the same amount of movement in me leathers but it makes me feel a lot safer (if i came off) than my textile, which by the way lets water in like its not there. So if you can, get both, but if you go for a leather get the best you can afford.

use leather in the summer, ive got a triumph fully vented and one with zip open vents on the sleeves and back. triumph jackets are realy tough and when a poper cover came of i phoned the factory and they sent a packet of replacements. they arent all covered in propoganda either.

I use a textile jacket in the winter. Mine's a Belstaff and is completely weather proof and has been thoroughly tested lately just to make sure. :storm: :storm: It's a terrific jacket if you have a fetish for zips, velcro and poppers and only takes about ten minutes to put on. I could use it in the summer after taking the liner out as it has zipped ventilation too. It's nowhere near as comfortable as my leathers for summer use though. One of my leather jackets is a real lightweight summer jobbie with vents on the back and shoulders and has never been a problem oveheating wise. It still contains a full set of Knox armour although to look at it you'd never tell. To be really cool in summer I also have a Belstaff Airtex thingy. That amounts to a Kevlar string vest with sleeves and just enough material to hold the Knox shoulder, elbow and back protectors in place with. It's the next best thing to actually riding a bike naked. (I would imagine). As an afterthought, a friend of mine is a TWAT. (Two Wheeled Advanced Trainer for short, what did you think I meant? ) He's out all day, every day in all weathers and only ever wears textile. I'd say his bike gear is thoroughly tested so would be prepared to trust his judgement and recommendations in future.

I wear an Alpinestars V4 leather jacket in the summer. Removable liner & lots of vents. Ms Snoops has a Alpinestars Dyno leather jacket for the summer. In winter i wear a Spada textile jacket because its at least twice as warm and totally waterproof for my daily 40 mile commute, where as the leather one isnt waterproof. Ms Snoops has a Richa textile jacket for winter for warmth(she doesnt do wet on a motorbike!). So,MY opinion...leather for coolness & dry weather...textile for warmth & wet weather!

Oh yeah...ive also started wearing ski gloves in really cold, wet weather. Not much protection(apart from about 3 inchs of thick insulation)but ive never worn such a warm glove...

Actually Bernard,if youre only gonna own one jacket, textile has to be the way to go as a textile jacket does it all, where as i said earlier,a leather jacket is neither waterproof or particularly warm...although it may offer better protection in an off...

Agreed... Textile is the way to go... I have a Kushitani and it is excellent It has 2 zip out layers for warmth and waterprooofing Ventilation as well and you can zip off the sleeves for wandering around in the sunshine Would not wear a leather again, they are not particularly waterproof, windproof or warm..... IMHO

For me it has to be leather on the bike, I just don't feel comfortable in the manmade stuff.
It's OK maybe for a quick commute to work or so, but i find it far too bulky for 'proper' riding.
