I bought a second hand laptop as a Christmas present for myself
its in great condition and has win 7 installed, originally it had XP installed, although it runs OK with win 7 i would like it to run quicker, Ive been told to try ubuntu.
Ive tried like crazy to install it but I'm getting nowhere
anyone use/used it?

You can run Ubuntu straight from the CD without having to install it. Used it a couple of times and even buit a couple of towers with it installed. Runs fine although I haven't tried installing it alongside Win7 and multi-booting. I found that networking was easy as long as the wireless card was recognised. had driver trouble with a couple of cards

I can get the drivers for you if you want Thanks for the offer Burchy My disc arrived yesterday, I was all excited so got straight into it hmm no drivers found.......strange I know I'll call the helpdesk Errrr you need to install another programme first, ok, what programme, I DONT KNOW!!! great I ended up taking it to my local computer repair shop today, seems the disc had NO DRIVERS on it at all. Cost me £30 to get it done, but its running like a dream now and i have the latest updates installed too The shower of shit that sent me the disc is gonna be getting a visit from trading standards.

I've been running Ubuntu now for three years or more. In many ways its a good deal different to windows but mostly in good ways. There's always plenty of help available for ubuntu users provided you know where to look. Make friends with Google and you won't go far wrong.
I have two laptops and a desktop computer here, all dual booted running both Windows and Ubuntu and TBH windows hardly ever gets used nowadays. I find that many windows programmes and accessories are bloated out with bells, whistles and special effects wheras ubuntu just gets on with the job quietly and smoothly.
And best of all the operating system and all additional software are all priced exactly the same. £ Zilch

Now I've got this laptop working spot on, I think I'll have a go at rebuilding my old Thinkpad and start with Ubuntu on that one
