Hi im new member after some help. went to start my bike yeserday. would not turn over. i remember a bit of info that the gpz 900 suffered a system lock when fuel leaked in to the barrols. took plugs out and there you go. drained the oil and removed 8 1/2 L of fuel/oil from the sump. i know its the fuel tap diafram but to my question
is this a common fault with the zrx ? anyone heard of this before.?

nope never heard of this before, at least not on a rex, had a wander through the tech section and next door and it dosent seem to be mentioned there either.
BTW
welcome to the :zrxuk:

More likely that you or someone left the fuel tap on "prime" which will override the diaphram in the tap.
Don't forget to change the filter as well. I would replace the oil and turn the engine over with the plugs out to get the oil circulating properly before trying to fire it up again

The possibility of it sitting on Prime is certainly a first thing to check.
There is an O ring in the petcock that does periodically fail and fuel leaks result. They aren't overly expensive from Kawasaki, but as long as you find O rings that are not damaged by fuel, some folks have found appropriate O rings at hardware stores.
Others have simply replaced the stock petcock with a positive on/off one that simply bypasses the vacuum controlled stock petcock. Gives you a positive stop and its up to you to turn it off.

would leaving it on Prime fill up the cylinders bit nasty that, have seen cars getting their sumps blown off cause dodgy rings letting fuel leak down into the sump. I have left the fuel on bikes before and this never happened, so this makes me wonder if leaving on prime would cause this.

Yeah, I agree - sounds more like a stuck float in one of the carbs to me - as it shouldn't make any difference whether the tap is on vaccum (on) or prime as the carbs should stop filling once the float reaches the max (much like a toilet cistern)?

It still means there is an underlying problem with your float valves tho'. They shouldn't let fuel through even if it were left on prime.

Phoenix hit it on the head. If left the petcock is left on prime, then the only things standing between the fuel and your crankcase is the weakest float bowl pin seal. I'd also remove the spark plugs and spin it over a bit with them removed, just to get rid of any liquid fuel that might remain in the cylinders as well. You don't want to be trying to start it with 1/2 cup of liquid fuel in there. That's how the fuel got to the crankcase, running into the cylinders and draining down past the rings to the crankcase.

cheap fix is to fit a quick release valve into the system, then if parked up for a few weeks all you gotta do is disconnect it, remember to get one with an auto shut off.

The o ring in the tap is known to fail and allows fuel to flow down the vacuum pipe into the inlet manifold then into the cylinder

Just to add very recently i have had this problem with fuel leaking into the sump and after a long investigation it was the petcock at fault ...and/or your needle valves not seating correctly in the float bowls . A recomendation is to change needle valves every 2 yrs from the local kwak shop but i think thats a bit far fetched esp at £100 a set....
