One step at a time. Is fuel getting to the carbs to start with?
If it is then almost certainly gummed up pilot jets if the bike has been stood for a while which is a carbs off job.

Good luck with it. Hopefully it will have jets that will unscrew but some of the '80's stuff were just pressed into place & you'll have to pull them out with a stud extractor so probably will bugger them up and need new ones. A man who knows everything that you will ever need to know about early carbs is here.......... www.nrp-carbs.co.uk/

Just done a set of carbs for the ZZR600. Picked up a complete bank for just £3 :ebay: Firstly, clean them off externally. It make sit so much easier to handle and stops bits of grit getting to the more delicate areas. Do one carb at a time so that you don't fix up parts from different bodies. Each carb probably has a filter on the fuel inlet side. Easy to get clogged with rust from the tank. The pilot jets are really small holes. Don't be tempted to use anything metallic the shift the crud. it will only make the whole bigger and upset the fuelling. I used an old toothbrush with watch cleaning fluid, but muck off works well. Treat the diaphragms with respect. They tear easily and cost a packet to replace

I used tae put carbs into an ultrasonic bath which wis filled wae carbon tetrachloride. Never had tae strip the carbs, worked every time. Came out clean as a whistle. Of course a worked in a lab in these days and hid loads o chemicals. So this is prob nae help at awe.

Have to say, kev, that I'm rather envious of you. I love the challenge of a bike that doesn't work or doesn't work properly, and its even better when it's someone else's, 'cos you can always just give it back! (not that I EVER would do that!)
