Ive had a kinda "knocking" sensation thru the bars on my Blackbird for a few weeks now. Ive always suspected it was the headstock bearings that needed tightening a tad,so today i got around to having a look. To get to the adjuster, you have to remove the clip-ons & the top yolk,so i did this and while i was "in there",i greased them up. After adjusting them & putting it all back together,i smugly rocked the bike on the front brake expecting the knock to have disappeared, only to find it still present. So,with the front wheel off the ground,i rocked the forks back & forth, but could detect no play. It was when i tried rocking the forks back& forth while holding the wheel i discovered the knock. It was knackered wheel bearings. There must have been 5mm of play at the wheel rim! I whipped the wheel out & knocked the bearings out & popped into my local fasteners supplier, who also stocks a huge amount of bearings. We matched them up & £4.50 later i was on my way home with a new pair of bearings. I tapped them in,bunged the wheel in & hey presto,no knock!!! A swift road test followed & a combination of freshly greased & adjusted headstock bearings & new silky wheel bearings have transformed the steering. I could never have imagined that two such small things could have such a huge effect on the steering and feel of the bike. Im a happy bunny. Two hours work and £4.50p for a sweet steering & handling bike...Bargain...!!!

There are so many fitters out there and not enough mechanics as i see it, i dread the days when the bikes need anything doing to them that i cant do myself

If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer.
