All depends, really when it was last serviced. the Good Book says for an 02 that it is serviced every 7500 miles or 12 months. Bearing in mind that yours is now nearly 5 years old, I reckon that a longer service could well be in order. Valve clearances should be checked at 7500 intervals anyway. If you intends on keeping it for some time (and I can't think of a good reason for getting rid of it) then I, personally, would set a benchmark now and do the "big" one so that you know where you are from here on in.

i change oil & filter every 3000 k. plugs at 12000 k (your supposed to check them at 6000 k but i haven't had a problem). for easy access to the plugs let out the coolant (your supposed to change it every 2 years & it's cheap) , get rid of ALL that crap under the gas tank & blow out the plug holes to ensure there's no rocks that'll drop into the combustion chambers then i pull the plugs. eyeball the gap & install the new plugs before any shyte falls on the pistons. at this point i'm only 6 bolts away from the shims. so i might as well have a peek ( at almost 60,000 k the valves are pretty well seated but i'm there anyway) as your supposed to do them every 12000 k. set them at the loosest of the range & if you can get all the intakes the exactly the same & all the exhausts exactly the same the motor'll run a bit crisper. its nice to have a pint when your working on your sled but don't get sloshed until you've done your shim math & installed them. they're awkward little bastards (i can see why some of you guys pull the cams) & you don't want to be removing your pulse cover to find the one that got away. i'd talk about putting it back together but i've run out of room. hope i don't leave some poor sod with his bike apart!!

"for easy access to the plugs let out the coolant " Eh? Why?

"for easy access to the plugs let out the coolant " Eh? Why? :hmm: Not sure why. If he's referring to removal of the emissions crap, which may make access to the plugs easier, you don't have to drain the coolant to do that.

ok you crazy canuk! i actually put that in as an afterthought because i realized when you removed all that CRAP under the tank there'd be anti-freeze all over the floor so it was for the numptys (whatever that means). FLOOGS MAKING ME PARANOID & i'm not even a member of that illustrious society on the island. make sense now? i know i sound casual about working on bikes but i do realize that the only things between my (damn didn't work again, can somebody tell me how to add those funny little smilies) and the road are my brain, my suspension settings & my tires. sorry, didn't mean to snarl but I'd rather do it myself than trust some underpaid (again) with my life!! sorry i digress.

If you have antifreeze in your octopus there is something seriously wrong with your bike

thank god you haven't read my comments on burchys shimming!!! Phoenix i assume your referring to the vacuum switch valve & all the stuff stuck on it as an octopus. gotta get that old rex manual Jacques Cousteau published! all i really meant to say originally is:- i like servicing my own bike because (quote from THE THIN BLUE LINE) it's my & i don't want a cock-up! and it's easier to do everything at once.

You'd be right there Jeff. When all that emissions crap comes off, and one holds it up briefly before flinging it in the general direction of the trashcan, it has been noted that it resembles an octopus. I removed all that stuff from my REX and nary a drop of antifreeze was released, let alone spilled on the floor. I do understand your dilema regarding who does the servicing on your bike. I have done most of mine for the same reason. But, having to decide right now whether to wait for days for sufficient time to remove wheels, truck them into Cycle Works in Edmonton to have my Conti's installed and then reverse the process (time seems to be in extremely short supply right now as I'm working my regular job, installing Jr. Spot and Par 4 theatrical lighting and a control system at a church, playing in the band, assist my son with completing his fence, installing the last of the hardwood in my daughter's place, and trying to keep up with the yard maintenance and job jar at home), or trust the mechanics there to do it for me. Just looking at my schedule and I'm leaning towards the mechanics cuz I'm not looking forward to very many more miles on my existing tires!
