Just lately , Rexs taillight has been getting a bit on the dim side. I may well be better seen with a couple of candles in the rear light instead. The brakelights work fine. Now I know that I've tint sprayed the rear lens to make it darker but not as much as my other bike and I don't have a problem with that. I did wonder if the bulbs themselves had blackened with age so I replaced them. I've now covered a tad over 30K miles and always ride with the lights on. I've not changed the rear bulbs in all that time. The old bulbs didn't appear to be blackened at all and before fitting the new ones into their holders I tried them out to check they were working and to compare them to the originals. No, difference. Still as dim as ever. Any suggestions?

Check the wiring connetions to the tail light. Poor connections just don't pass current like good ones.

:agreed:
Almost certainly a dodgy connections, especially if both bulbs are equally dim.

:agreed: Some kind of power drain threw a bad connection.

probably verdigre of something similar in the connector, no doubt due to a bit of water ingress (that will teach you to wash it so often). if it aint that try the earth connection, although that is more likely result in the light earthing out and both tail and stop comming on together.
