Hi all, this is my first post as I am shortly to buy a 1200s (Or maybe an R) and I just wanted to know which model years have a full stainless system? I read a few months ago in a magazine test that they were all stainless but I have since seen rusty collector boxes on second hand ones, can anybody enlighten me…Thanks

All of the 1200's had SS systems, some were painted black and some were polished. They weren't the highest grade of SS however.
I think the 1100's were mild steel with a coating/paint??

Bin the standard system anyway. It is so heavy & inefficient.

all 1200 systems are stainless but it wasnt till 2005 onwards that they made the downpipes shiney. dont worry about a bit of rusting around the collector box area, (ie under the engine) as this can be combatted with a bit of stovex or similar, keeping those downpipes black and shiney.

Thats a shame as i was looking at an 03 model, i had to pay £250 for the front pipes on my RF9 when they perforated so full Stainless was a big attraction. Still won't put me off buying one for sure.

The 03 1200's had SS pipes, its just that they were painted black in 03. From 04 or 05?? on that Kawasaki polished them up (same pipe, just no paint). There are those who've taken the paint off the black pipes and polished them up and been happy. Too much effort for the results for me. I just removed 28 lbs of black, SS stock pipes from my 03 and installed 11.8 lbs of shiny, high quality Akrapovic SS pipes.

I take your point, Loosing unsprung weight is tremendous fun. I just need to find the bike now, a few dealers in the UK have new 01 and 03 bikes brand new so here I go.
