Seeing one of the young lads riding his bike in to work today tickled my funny bone Craig is 19 years old and stands 6 feet 4 inches and weighs about twenty stone on a good day
He is a huge, lumocking, awkward looking lad who is known as a good laugh, and the owner of the finest set of man breasts this side of an Ann Summers catalogue...
He recently picked up a brand new Honda Varadero 125, of which he is very rightly proud In the first week, he rode into the back of a stationery car and a week later he was rear ended at traffic lights He's backed it into the metal railings and dropped it off it's sidestand already. He's Honda's parts department's finest customer..
We had a conversation recently where I asked him what bike he wants once his probation period is over. He replied the big Varadero which is a 900. When I pointed out that it's actually a 1000cc bike (998cc), he shook his head maintaining it's a 900. I explained the designation XLV1000 Varadero and that a new model will soon be appearing, and he just stared blankly back at me. The lights were on but nobody was home that night
He rode into work this morning and I was actually in hysterics. The tiny Varadero 125's pitiful susupension compressed like a mattress with a hippo lying on it. I swear the rear mudguard was scraping on the rear tyre. The little engine buzzed like a wasp in an empty Red Bull can, and when he dismounted, like a sumo from a geisha girl, the bike gasped a sigh of releif as it bounced back up to it's normal ride height
The alarm beeped and he walked away. Then he stopped, turned and.....for a few moments he just stood there admiring his steed. He then went inside to start work. For me, that gaze spoke volumes. Pure love and devotion and the early seedlings of what will hopefully be a long and enjoyable love affair with all things two wheeled. Priceless. I had that same feeling when I had my very first bike....and, like many of you, I still turn and stare at my REX when I park it up now
