:hmm: interesting press release...
Rebel plan backed by Ecclestone..
Formula One commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone is at the centre of an initiative to redevelop Silverstone and guarantee the British Grand Prix for the next 10 years. The plan will be presented to the British Racing Drivers' Club on the same day this month that Damon Hill is expected to be elected the BRDC president.
The Ecclestone-backed scheme is in direct opposition to the alternative already before BRDC members sponsored by outgoing president Sir Jackie Stewart and the BRDC board. That proposal, which would see the 780-acre site in Northamptonshire radically redeveloped with the inclusion of residential homes by St Modwen Properties in return for a 150-year lease, met with outrage in more radical quarters and disquiet elsewhere.
At the heart of Stiller's plan is a partnership with Ecclestone to run the British Grand Prix. Effectively the BRDC and Ecclestone would be joint promoters over 10 years, sharing the cost of upgrading the circuit, including the addition of a new pit and paddock complex, while splitting gate money and revenues from sponsorship and advertising.
In addition, the BRDC would embark on a separate five-year development to bring Silverstone into line with the more exotic grand prix venues that have recently emerged in China, Bahrain and Turkey. This would include a 6,000-seat debenture grandstand at Woodcote replete with corporate suites, cafes and bars, a theme park, an extreme sports site, a half-mile oval and an exhibition centre.
Members get their first sighting of Stiller's plans today before the formal unveiling on April 28, at which members will be invited to vote on the removal of the board. The vote and rival plan are expressions of the hostility felt by Stiller and likeminded BRDC members towards Stewart and the board.
