I received a letter from the DVLA in Glasgow (??) earlier today because apparently I've failed to re licence my old car. Allegedly I didn't declare SORN either.
It's true, I didn't re-tax the vehicle. I applied for a refund of duty at my local office back in January as that car hasn't turned a wheel since late last year. I would have had to declare SORN at the same time as my reason for the refund. The tax disc that was on the car at the time would have expired end of March.
Now I find I'm liable for a £40 penalty, increasing to £80 if I don't pay it within the month, I must either re licence the vehicle or declare SORN and I have to pay the arrears of duty ammounting to £28.75 :rocket:
If I don't either re-tax it or declare SORN I could be prosecuted and fined a minimum of £1000
Looking at the SORN Declaration form, which I am backdating to 27/01/06, the date they've given me as being on their records as the registered keeper, if I make a false declaration on that, I could be fined up to £5000 and imprisoned.
Looks like I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't then.
With the DVLA as we all know based at Swansea and many local vechcle licencing offices and now I find, the Continuous Registration Centre based in Scotland is it any wonder that they can't get their records straight?
How on earth do they get the Charter Mark for customer service excellence? I tried to phone them earlier to square things up and got one of those annoying "press this number for that option " answering services, only to get the engaged tone when I selected the appropriate option. :rocket:
