Hi all.
I'm Dave. I live in Dublin, Ireland and am the proud owner of a mint y2k CBR900 RRY (929) and a soon to be fairly tidy ZRX400 E1.
I got the non-runner baby Rex from a work colleague who had it garaged and hadn't driven it for approx 4 yrs in January.
Over the last 8 or 9 weeks, I've it up and running and gone over it with a fine tooth comb but7si still have a little bit to do.
This is what I've done so far.
1. Unseized brakes front and back 2. New engine oil and filter. 3. Renewed spark plugs. 4. Cleaned the air filter. 5. Drained old fuel from the carbs. 6. Flushed and changed coolant. 7. Degreased, Cleaned and re-lubed chain. 8. Pumped up the tyres. 9. Charged the battery. 10. Fixed a rocker cover oil leak in front of the camchain.
So far so good!! Running a bit 'lumpy' when cold but like a swiss watch when it warms up so I'm thinking a strip, thorough clean and rebuild of the carbs will sort this due to it lying up and the fuel 'going off' in the carbs.
The rear shock have absolutely no dampening so I've sourced a replacement set off a recently MOT'd Z1000 which are slightly shorter but were only £4.99 for the pair on fleabay.... they'll do for now!!! Front left fork oil seal is weeping and the dust seals are perished so they will be next to be rebuilt with new seals then all thats left to do is a new set of tyres and She's 100%.
To be continued...................
Dave

Welcome, and good luck with the baby REX! Looks like it is coming along well.
Is black an original colour for that bike or has it been repainted.
Young Burchy is our resident ZRX400 expert here. He brought his up to an outstanding standard before he swapped it out for an 1100.

Cheers lightspeed Its not actually black, Its a very dark metallic graphite colour. Haven't a clue about the actual official name of the colour but I think it is original alright. The paintwork is in very good condition since its had its T-cut and polish and has the usual slight wear in all the right places considering its a 17 year old bike!! Hope the replacement shocks arrive tomorrow. Just back in from the garage after giving the 'Blade a full service and replacing the brake fluid F+R. On a roll this week!! Dave

Have just knocked off after a 15hr nightshift and have been greeted by a package containing the 'new to me' rear shocks - minus bushings ;( . Doh!!!
The 400's top bushings were a straight swap but the bottom ones were too big so the shocks are gone off to a mate to skim and press the bottom bushings in. In the mean time, the badly pitted and pretty nasty looking chrome top caps have now been primed and sprayed in black. If I see a decent shade of gold paint in the future I'll eventually re-spray them again.
Now, My cup of tea is finished so its back to the grindstone!!!

Bringing another ZRX400 back on the road - good man. Welcome to ZRXUK btw. These little 400's are so highly tuned as standard that they do run a bit lumpy when cold and really don't want to know until you've been riding her for a good 5-10miles. Then you can open her up and watch the revs rise and rise and rise. Sounds like you have it sussed what you need doing. Any questions don't hesitate to post them in the Technical section. Keep us updated with the pics. It will be worth it in the end. I rode a ZX-7R alongside my ZRX4 and the 4 always gave me the biggest smile at a quarter of the speed

Cheers Young Burchy. No doubt I'll be bending your ear on a few issues in the future!! (Ha Ha)
Got the rear shocks back. The original bushings for the bottom shock mounts needed 6mm skimmed off them and a tiny bit of grinding on the swing arm lugs to get them to fit. Took her out for a test ride and found a fecking pin hole leak in the bottom rubber coolant hose. Easy enough fix though Thank God but a pain in the arse none the less.
Forks and tyres still to do and Brake Calipers need a lick of paint - Gold obviously!! Might go with braided hoses up front too.
Got a price for tyres - €225 fitted and balanced for a pair of Avon Roadriders. Anyone got any experiences with them or alternatives in the same price range???

No worries ;D I had Bridgestone BT092's for the time I owned my 400. Great in the dry and wet, chicken strips disappeared within 15 miles of new. Would have no reservations in getting them again for a 400.

Fork seals ordered via fleabay. Just hope they are the right ones. Supposed to be the same as a Zephyr 750 C . Can't bear the thought of a wasted tenner if they are the wrong ones!!!!

Forks rebuilt and back on the bike. Used 15w fork oil as front felt a bit spongey. The heavier oil should add a bit more dampening. If anyone needs to know its 497mls per leg after a strip and rebuild.
