I have installed an aftermarket headlight wiring kit made by a guy over on the OA that provides the headlight with a full 12v instead of the 9 or so the stock harness provides. Even with the stock bulb this is much brighter. I may also go to a Silvania bulb and a clear lense as that seems to be the brightest combination without the cost and effort of an HID conversion.
One of the issues with the HID (at least with an R) is space inside the headlight fairing to install the ballast. Probably could go elsewhere but it is one more thing that has to be added.

i measured my voltage and got 12v at the bulb anyway, but i could see a relay being an advantage with high wattage bulbs, the relay issue is not a prob anyway, its a 2.99 relay and 4 wires so not a prob,i tried on 3 kawis and never found anywhere near 9v , always 11 or 12v, getting 9v at the bulb means a really bad loom, which iv never found ?(im a sparky by trade)
i have found theres loads of room for a slim ballast in an r fairing, so think ill go for a 50w hid as its loads brighter, and uses far less power, i had 1 on a diff bike, and it was GOOD it wasnt a H4 though, i wonderd what people think of the bi xenon H4 as there seem to be diff types
