Hi there. I've received an advisory notice on the MOT for Screw's ZRX last week. They claim that BOTH the tyre valve stems are slightly perished and I should look at replacing them asap. Screw only replaced the tyres last October and did very little mileage on them and I've only just started riding it. There is a difference of opinion between a friend and the garage that's going to service it about whether I should have metal valve stems fitted instead of normal ones. The garage says that they will make the wheels unbalanced and cause problems with the handling of such a heavy bike. My friend says that it shouldn't cause a problem and that he thinks they don't want to fit them either because ultimately I'll end up saving money, or, they can't be bothered to order them in. What to do??? I'm not that mechanically minded and have been relying on them for advice coz I don't want to hurt Screw's bike and my friend normally knows what they're talking about!!! And there I was wondering if I'd ever use the forum...lol

Hi Moose, right answers in order, the valve's are normally replaced at the same time as the tyres and therefore I would initially see if you can find the receipt and see if this was done. If so take the bike back to the tyre fitters. I would be extremely surprised to find a new set had perished so quickly. to fit the new valves, whoever does it has got to remove the tyres first anyway and therefore no matter which ones you use, the wheels are gonna need re balancing. as said in top answer, the valves should always be replaced when the tyres are so there is no advantage in getting metal ones other that for the bling effect. If you want that you can buy chromed sleeves that slide over the top of the rubber valves and therefore use time and time again, or until some git nicks them (voice of experience lol). hope this helps

thanks guys, will try and find the receipt. don't know what screw would have done with it. may just have to put it down to experience. have felt that the tyre fitters he used didnt do a proper job, but have no proof. will be putting the bike into somewhere else anyway.

you tend to find that metal valve stems are set at right angles, which makes it much easier to check pressures and add air if required
should make no difference in balance, had them fitted as standard to my Triumph and never had a bit of trouble with them

Hi Moose
I wouldn't worry about it at all. Just make sure they get replaced when new boots are fitted. Afterall, it was only an advisory
