Saw that article when it came out but don't have the magazine anymore. If I remember correctly they spent about $15,000 US doing the work. Several members of the OA have spent significantly less than that on their turbo bikes with similar or better performance. Looks very cool though! I'm sure the aftermarket arm is extended, though not as much as some of the guys into dragracing have extended theirs. No way to hook up 200 hp without some kind of extension.

I love the idea of supercharging. Much fun than messing about with turbos. All that extra power from tickover...no waiting for the turbo to spin up to speed then hitting you...just smooth, immense power from tickover to the red line.Lovely...and much simpler to install & so simple to set up.No holed pistons & melted valves...mmm,supercharging...

They are both essentially the same,in that they use a "blower" with which to force a greater air/fuel mixtuer into the engine. The difference is in how this "blower" is driven. A turbocharger is driven by a turbine in the exhaust system, using spent exhaust gasses to spin it. Its an efficient system,as its only using wasted energy to drive it. Its main disadvantage is "turbo lag" which means that it needs to spin up to speed before it starts to boost. This can be improved by moving the turbocharger nearer the exhaust ports, but then it suffers from overheating. A supercharger is driven directly from the crankshaft...usually on a 2:1 ratio-although this can be varied to produce more,or less boost. The beauty of a supercharger is that theres no "lag". Because its crankshaft driven, its working as long as the engine is spinning, therefore you get huge amounts of power & lots of torques from tickover to the redline. The boost is immediate, whatever the revs. Its disadvantage is that being crankshaft driven,it uses some of the extra power it generates to drive itself...but not that much. The two main types of supercharger are the "vane" type & the "rootes" type. Sometimes you hear people refer to a supercharger as a "blower". Generally speaking,a supercharger is placed between the engine & the carb, sucking mixture from the carb & pushing it into the engine, where a blower is mounted outside the carb, blowing through the carb into the engine. A blower is usually run at a much lower pressure. Hope this explains the difference... BTW: Can you tell i used to do drag racing in my mis-spent youth. . . !
