yeh all clear, theres a small cone shaped thing that sits over the overflow which is connected to the filler cap that allows air to enter tank
took cap off and and did a blow/ suck action and its working ok

so that not the answer to my problem i'll carry on digging

well i lost patience with my bike and its rough running problem so down the shop it went
got a call later today to say they had found my problem
i have petrol entering the fuel tap vacuum pipe which means the diaphragm in the tap is u/s
so its off to fleebay to get a repair kit
