Before I pose the question, I know the simple answer is to go and check my header pipes, BUT I don't actually get my grubby paws on the bike until spring. And I want to know the answer now! So, does the UK version of the ZRX1200 have a cat or not? I ask because of the following, seemingly contradictory, information: - The on-line version of the workshop manual states that the power outut of the catalysed engines in 78.2kW (106.2PS) while the non-catalysed engines put out 90kW (122PS) - The 2003 Kawasaki range brochure states that the UK models have a power output of 122PS. (i.e. non-catalysed) . BUT - all the threads I have read on the subject, state that the 01- to 04 ZRX's (with the black headers) have a catalytic converter in the collector box. The power difference, due to increased restriction in the exhaust, I can understand. And all will become clear(er), I hope, once I can actually eyeball the headers, but until then, can anyone state which headers were standard UK fitment? KHI-M078 (non-cat) or KHI-M077 (with cat)?

The best thing to do with either type of header is to put them in the bin if it's optimum power you want. Being double skinned they have a very narrow internal Bore and this is the main 'restriction' on the bike. A decent system suitably set up will release around 20 bhp or so.

The matt black stainless 1200 headers all have a cat in the last 12" on the headers.. If you look closely at the pipe, you can see the spot weld that hols it in place.
Later polished headers have the cat on the end of the headers actually protruding into the can.
In addition the standard can also has a cat in the can. I've got a picture somewhere of the cat glowing cherry red, taken looking into the can, after a couple of dyno runs

Even if you are a tree hugger the whole lot needs to go in the bin. Fact.

Best option is to bin 'em.
A full after-market exhaust with a jet kit will certainly add a noticeable amount of power, and lower the weight of the bike by about 20 lbs as well. Stockers weigh about 30 lbs and most after-market SS pipes weigh in the order of 11 to 12 lbs.

So, in terms of releasing pent-up power the options in decending order of cost and effectiveness are:
1. FULL Acrapovic or Morawaki system 2. Sandy's or Motad headers plus end can of choice. 3. New end can. 4. Go on a diet!
Can anyone supply realistic BHP gains for each of the 3 realistic options??
Ta muchly.

1) About 20 bhp 2) A bit less 3) None whatsoever 4) No increase in BHP but it may improve the power to weight ratio.

Admittedly on 2 different dynos, but replacing the stock can with a Beowulf can gave me an extra 10BHP at the back wheel

Possibly having the stock system set up properly on the dyno could release a bit extra?
Nobody can dispute tho' that the stock headers are the restriction here.
A bit like trying to run a marathon breathing out through a straw!!!

:hmm: Most excellent analogy there Phoenix Burchy, I'd have to chalk most of that 10 hp up to different dynos.

Know what you say LS, but the Beowulf can did feel much more responsive that the stocker
