Cassie is a friend of YB who met on Facebook. She's a smashing kid who rides this clapped out old CB500. Been riding about 2 years now and accompanied us to the dyno day last October.
On the way back her bike dropped onto 1 cylinder a couple of times, although she got home OK. A friend of hers "had a look at it" and since then it hasn't started at all. It lives outside all the time without a cover!!!
Anyhows I offered to have a looka at it as well for her and picked it up by trailer last weekend. Sure enouth it wouldn't start, so 2 hours on the optimate jsut to help.
Seat up and tank off. Plugs out and they looked brand new. Either that or a very weak mixture. Injuected 10cc of petrol down each plug hole, plugs back in and weyhey, she starts, a bit lumpy, mind.
Decide to pull the carbs. Bit of a fiddle as the air box has to come off at the same time. There is a "sub-air" filter coming off the carbs which allows air pressure to act under the diaphram. Except that there was NO filter, just an empty box with a bit of gunge in it. Not easily sourced so I mage one from a bit of sponge I found under the kitchen sink.
Opened up the carbs and lo and behold a few lumps of old sub-air filter! Think I have sourced the problem.
A good clean up and rebuild and she fire on the 3rd prod. Adjust the tickopver and away for a test ride after first stripping and rebuilding a seized from caliper.
Into the wind she sustained a steady 95 for a couple of miles, so I reckon it's good to go. Just goes to show what a lack of regul;ar servicing can do.
Oh, and a good Burchy cleanup as well on the shiny bits
