Old video of Eddie on the 1980 K1000J EddieOld, slow voice Kawaski claimed the strongest, lightest frame that required no reinforcing for superbike racing. Guess they didn't tell Eddie that since he talked about it squirming and him fighting to keep control, eh?

Guess they didn't tell Eddie that since he talked about it squirming and him fighting to keep control, eh? Over here that bike was marketed as the Z1000J, the frame wasn't the problem and it was a massive improvement over the earlier models, the problem was the choice of bearing in the swingarm, used to cause the bike to weave in high speed corners resulting in tank slappers, even kawasaki's steering damper did little to help, when they introduced the Z1000R they changed the geometry of the frame to make it turn quicker but still used the crap swingarm bearings, the cure was to change the swingarm for one that used taper roller bearings instead of the needle bearing arrangement it had from the factory...

That's most interesting. I have heard a variety of explanations for the handling issues (mostly dealing with steering head bracing needed), but never anything about the swingarm bearings. I have experienced high speed weave on my 84 KZ1100R :hmm: I wonder if I would actually have to change the swingarm or could I just swap out the stock bearings for tapered ones??

Cool vid, but Jeez, absolutely no protection. I mean I've got gardening gloves with more padding on them than that and his leathers look as thin as f**k!
