I came across some interesting blurb about Eddie Lawson relating to his carting career after retiring from the GP circuit. I know it's not bikes, but it's interesting just the same I think. After a stint in Indy cars and then Indy lites, he went into SUPERKARTS. He still races these carts today, living in Lake Havasu, Arizona with his wife, and is still great mates with Wayne Rainey (who also races Superkarts). Lawson's number 7 Superkart apparently has a 360 HP per litre power to weight ratio, greater than almost anything bar the Ferrari Enzo. Lawson was clocked racing at Laguna Seca a couple of years back, over 2 seconds a lap faster than the Moto GP boys. His Kart is based on a Yamaha TZ250 2 stroke twin, with a 92bhp engine driving through a six speed sequential box. It's capable of reaching around 140mph and revs to around 13000rpm. In standard race trim it would set you back around $30,000. Rules state that the minimum weight for kart and driver must be no less than 462ibs, (Lawson was measured at 475ibs). The karts have a longer wheelbase than the other classes, with more weight for stability, and register 2G's in corner speeds. They have ventilated disc's and Bridgestone tyres. Lawson was also an instructor and gave demo drives and track days and was notorious for blistering lap times and entering corners at 120MPH without lifting off the loud pedal!! For several years, Lawson was the man to beat but, for the last few seasons he has been slipping down the rankings as the younger, fitter and perhaps hungrier drivers come onto the scene. I think he was something like 13th overall in the championship a few years back.
