May 27 2006 WSB: Hill on pole Tommy Hill will start from pole position for the Silverstone round of the World Superbike championship after a superpole lap of 1:38.001 on the Virgin Yamaha. He'll head the grid from championship leader Troy Bayliss, who lapped in 1:38.254, and British favourite Chris Walker, who put in a 1:38.265 lap on the Kawasaki ZX-10R. Hill set a series of fastest laps to take the pole but trying to go even faster he crashed and had to walk back to the pits. As he strolled down pit lane he was clapped all the way and congratulated by race director Stuart Higgs. At the press conference he said: " I can't beleive I'm standing on this stage next to Troy Bayliss... and I'm faster than him." Noriyuki Haga is fourth quickest, Michel Fabrizio fifth, and Alex Barros sixth. James Toseland has qualified in a disapointing 14th place, three seconds off the time of Hill.
