West stuns Kawasaki.
Even as the last lap of Saturday's Dutch TT began, Kawasaki competition manager Michel Bartholemy still didn't think new signing Anthony West could hold off Honda riders Marco Melandri and Carlos Checa.
Wet weather star West, riding in only his second MotoGP race since being drafted in to replace Olivier Jacque, delighted the team with an exemplary performance at a dry and sunny Circuit van Drenthe.
After a patchy start from seventh place on the grid, the 25-year-old Australian soon got into the swing of things, eventually finding himself in a fierce four-way battle with Alex Hofmann, Checa and Melandri.
Satellite Ducati rider Hofmann was able to shake free from West in the closing stages, but former MotoGP winner Melandri and former 500cc winner Checa were forced to cross the line just a few tenths behind the ninth-placed Australian.
"I was nervous on the line and, as soon as I released the clutch, I knew my start wasn't a good one. A lot of people went past and I couldn't quite get it together for the first few laps, but then I found a good rhythm," recalled West. "Hofmann, Checa and Melandri and I formed a bit of a group and we fought for the rest of the race. We were changing positions a lot, holding each other up, everyone trying everything: it was a bit wild at times. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I'm really glad I could stay with those guys for the rest of the race and that I didn't drop out of the group. I'm really happy: one of my goals was to be in the top ten this year but I didn't expect it to be at this race!"
"Anthony rode a fantastic race," declared Bartholemy. "It's not often someone impresses me but I must say that today, he did. He's only had a matter of hours on our bike in the dry but he's a fighter: battling with Checa, Hofmann and Melandri. I'm really happy. On the last lap, I still didn't believe he could finish in that position but he did. It was a fantastic job."
West's Kawasaki team-mate Randy de Puniet failed to finish after a collision with Chris Vermeulen.

This is the special livery with which Fiat Yamaha competed in this weekend's Dutch TT at Assen. The livery is inspired by Fiat's famous '500' and celebrates the forthcoming re-launch of the iconic car on 4th July, exactly 50 years after it was first launched in 1957. The design is inspired by the art and discography of the era, including Elvis Presley and Italy's Rita Pavone. The colours made a promising debut with former five times MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi second and Texan team-mate Colin Edwards fourth in this morning's first practice, then fourth and seventh in the afternoon. "I really like my new livery, it's fun and different and the colours especially are something you don't usually see on the racetrack!" said Rossi. "The Fiat 500 is a famous Italian icon so it's good to be able to celebrate the new version of the car in this way." "The livery's pretty cool, it's fun to have something different and I've had some good comments from the rest of the riders," claimed Edwards. "I'm not sure I could handle the pink every week but as a one-off special it's great!"

I thought the livery on Vale's bike was absolutely f*cking vile Made him look like a multi coloured frog. Couldn't even see the number 46 on the front. I soooo hope they change it some day soon
