"It's a win-win situation" is how Jonathan Rea of HM Plant Honda described his MotoGP wild-card ride with Team Roberts next weekend at Donington Park.
The call to take up the ride came out of the blue "When I was in Japan, Team Roberts got in contact with my team and just when I landed back into London to collect my visa, I got an unexpected phone call saying would I be up for riding at Donington. I said 'Yes' as it is a win-win situation for me to show case what I can do on the bike."
There is no pressure in this situation as he went on to say, "The bike is pretty under developed as it is, so it would be a lot worse if I jumped on a Repsol bike and had all the pressure of the world on my shoulders."
Rea has a very good working relationship with his Crew Chief and he will be going to Team Roberts with him. "I've been lucky enough to take my crew chief Chris Pike with me for the weekend. He will help me out and translate my information back to the team. I'm really looking forward to it and it would be a big step in my career and hopefully I can make the most out to this opportunity," he said.
The talented young Ulsterman has just recently returned from his first trip to Japan where he and his team-mate Ryuichi Kiyonari won the Suzuka 300Km race. "Japan was absolutely mega," he enthused. "The people were brilliant; HRC looked after me like nothing else. I'm really looking forward to getting to the eight hour and hopefully being paired up with Kiyo. In the 300Km race the combination worked really well and my crew chief was brilliant. We'll see what happens but hopefully it will all happen."
In the mean time he has to knuckle down to his home BSB race at Mondello Park in Ireland. "I can't actually wait to race day. I'm hoping for some dry track time but as usual it is just the old Irish weather here so we will see what happens. I think no matter what way it goes we are in a good position to be challenging for the front again," he concluded.
