Nakano gets good first impression. Variable weather conditions at Jerez restricted Shinya Nakano to just 17 laps on his debut for the Konica Minolta Honda team, but that was at least enough to give the Japanese a good first impression.
Before the arrival of rain, the former Kawasaki rider had returned to the pits three times as he confirmed the riding position and basic balance of his RC212V and Michelin tyres, after several seasons riding a ZX-RR on Bridgestone rubber.
When the rain came the Japanese elected not to test due to his lack of prior kilometres on the Honda and he finished the day ninth fastest.
"I only did 17-laps so it is difficult to see everything," confessed Shinya. "The engine feels positive, very smooth and the initial feeling is the handling should be good. When I first sat on the bike it didn't feel so small but riding it did feel small and easy to move around. Tyre grip was good in the dry and I had a good feeling about that but it is far too early to say this or that is OK or not. We have two more days testing here at Jerez and I will have a better understanding of the bike when the test has finished."
"Apart from the lack of laps, we are really satisfied with the first contact we had with the 2007 even if we wanted to remain longer on track to get a clearer idea of our potential," added team director Gianluca Montiron. "I'm grateful to all sponsors for their support throughout the past season and for their will to stay with us for the next championship challenge. Nakano joined our family and we immediately appreciated his professional approach to this new adventure. This represents a great motivation for our working group and incites us to try to make further efforts to obtain remarkable results."
Nakano was riding with updated Konica Minolta livery, which the team expects to be very close to its final 2007 colours.

Nakano's confidence grows. Shinya Nakano took a big step towards finding the ideal baseline set-up for his new 800cc Honda during the final day of his first test for the Konica Minolta team. The Japanese rider completed 70 laps at Jerez on Thursday, working on chassis and suspension before moving onto tyre testing for Michelin. The former Kawasaki rider ended the day sixth overall and 1.232secs from factory Honda rider Dani Pedrosa, fastest of all with the aid of a qualifying tyre. "I am much more confident on the bike today than I was yesterday," said Shinya. "Today I spent time working with various gearbox ratio changes to find the best base to work from. When we found that we moved on to suspension work and tyre testing. We had a little front-end chatter early on but fixed that with suspension settings. "Overall I must say this test has been very positive. I know we can improve and I have to improve myself. But I go back to Japan for a holiday with my family very pleased that we had a test within this year. The team now have time to work on the machine before we test at Sepang in January." "We are happy with the working method and the professionalism Shinya has demonstrated," added team technical director Giulio Bernardelle. "Today, in particular, we did a large amount of tyre and suspension tests and at the beginning of the day we had to finish the gearbox and engine set up we started yesterday. For this reason, Shinya could only start to push late in the afternoon, when the temperature on track had already lowered."
