MotoGP championship leader Nicky Hayden turned the tables on reigning champion Valentino Rossi during Friday practice at Estoril - the American outpacing his title rival by 0.56secs and six positions.
Rossi has chopped almost 10-points per race from Hayden's title lead in the past four rounds - reducing it from 51 to 12 points heading into Sunday's penultimate Portuguese Grand Prix - and continued to pile pressure on the Repsol Honda rider by leading the first free practice session at Estoril, with Hayden in fourth.
However, the Kentuckian turned the tables in the faster afternoon session - clocking the second best lap time, just 0.05secs behind Casey Stoner - while Rossi slipped back to eighth position on the overall timesheets.
"I saw that Nicky was very quick so it's definitely going to be hard this weekend!" claimed Rossi on Friday evening. "In the morning we immediately went well and we were fast from the start. Then this afternoon we weren't able to find the perfect tyre, so we need to do quite a lot more work in this area. Then we lost a bit of time because we had a problem with our first bike and so needed to set the second bike up quickly and so we only had time for three more laps before the session finished. Anyway despite these problems it's been a good start to the day overall and I am quite pleased. We have a lot of work to do tomorrow but I think it's going to be a good fight!" :corn:
