I have read several articles recently regarding Bridgestone tyres and the changes in models as old ones are being replaced.
I've been in contact with a brilliant bloke, GARY HARTSHORNE (Motorsport sales and technical adviser) at Bridgestone UK, to get some info on the tyres available for the Rex
Here are the basics:
BRIDGESTONE TYRES AVAILABLE FOR THE ZRX1200R & S MODELS
BT-020 Sports Touring
BT-014 Sports - replaces the BT-010
BT-002 Racing Street. As the name suggests, the grippiest road legal tyre on offer.
DISCONTINUED, BUT STILL AVAILABLE UNTIL STOCKS END
BT-010 Sports, but now discontinued
BT-012 - Sports, but again discontinued in many sizes. Use BT-014
BT57 - Sports Touring, discontinued in many sizes so use BT-020
BT56 - As BT-010, use BT-014.
So we have three choices. For sports touring the BT-020
For more sports orientated riding use the BT-014
And for the stickiest street legal tyres use BT-002
All three types follow the same sizes and designations for both 'R' and 'S' models of:
Front 120/70 ZR 17 58W TL
REAR 180/55 ZR 17 73W TL
But differ slightly as follows:
BT-020
FRONT BT-020 FL ZRX1200R/REAR BT-020 RL ZRX1200R
FRONT BT-020 FW ZRX1200S/REAR BT-020 RW ZRX1200S
BT-014
FRONT BT-014 F ZRX1200R/REAR BT-014 R ZRX1200R
FRONT BT-014 F SE ZRX1200S/REAR BT-014 R ZRX1200S
BT-002 RACING STREET
FRONT BT-002 F STREET ZRX1200R/REAR BT-002 R STREET ZRX R
FRONT BT-002 F STREET ZRX1200S/REAR BT-002 R STREET ZRX S
ALL Bridgestone tyres are recommended at the following pressures:
FRONT 2.5 BAR 36 Ibf/in
REAR 2.9 BAR 42 Ibf/in
Dear Floog,
The varying specs of tyre are normally designed to suit the motorcycle manufacturers criteria and not Bridgestone's (if the tyre is OE). However, sometimes we find that a tyre designed for another particular bike will work equally as well on some other bikes too. The varying specs can be for a number of changes. Sometimes it's just the compound, other times it's the construction; stiffer, softer, wider, narrower, taller, shorter and more.
I have product numbers for all the tyres listed and also relevant sizes and models for the ZRX1100 as well, which I'll gladly post if anyone is interested
