Just got a new laptop with a single 1GB memory. There is a spare slot to put more in. Can I just get another 1GB one and put it in the spare slot. or do I need to get a matching pair to take it to 2GB?

depends which type of memorary you are taking about, is it hard drive or ram, i imagine its ram in which case you should be able to put in a matching stick

I would check on Crucial memory web site and run their system checker Click hereObviously use the laptop to run the scan my system. It will give you a good idea what is needed. What laptop is it??

It's a Fujitsu Seimens Esprimo Mobile, A cheapo jobbie from Staples for £300 with windows vista. I have had to discard my trusty old steam powered one after spilling a full glass of G&T into it that it objected to, shame really as it was a trusty old steed.

It's a Fujitsu Seimens Esprimo Mobile If it is a Esprimo mobile it will be either a model M,D or U I think. You do not have to put mathcing pairs in but you will get better performance if you do. Most usually take DDR2 PC2-6400 or PC2-5300 memory I think you would be looking at less than £20 for a compatible memory on that.

As your laptop has Vista installed and some USB slots, you can stick in USB flash drives. Vista will ask you if you want to use these as memory also so in theory even though your max onboard ram is 2Gb you can add more by sticking in teh flash drives/sticks or whatever you want to call them.
Hope that makes sense

Hope that makes sense Just need to add that your memory stick needs to be Readyboost compatible. i.e. not a cheapo memory stick but one that works fast enough. There is a way of fooling the system into thinking that a particular drive is compatible but is of little benefit. For more info on this in Vista, click on start menu/help & Support and type in Readyboost.

When you plug it in Vista will give you the option to use readyboost if the stick is compatible

Mine said it wasn't compatible at first, then pressed test again and it was fine.
