hi guys, ive heard some horror storys of the tensioner knocking lumps of clutch basket and locking things up, theres a guy in scotland ive seen on ebay who builds engines for drag bikes and he sells a self fit uprate kit for the tensioner, think it was around £50 or so. check it out.

From what I have read, it is more an operator problem that causes it. ie starting the bike with the clutch in.

Having read this thread and most of the links, I'm starting to get paranoid. It appears to me that there have only been two or three instances of major failure and everyone else is just rehashing the same old stories. Anyway, I'll have a 12 month warranty when I get the bike so I should be OK 'till 2013 If I decide to modify the tensioner after that, is it just a simple matter of removing the clutch cover, whipping out the two tensioner mounting bolts, then modify/swap out the tensioner and reassemble? or would I need to take other chunks of rotating machinery out to get at the tensioner?

You mean the sleeve that someone in the USA is selling for peanuts? In terms of what's to be done to the bike its the same as replacing the tensioner. i.e. remove->modify->replace. Well used to getting my hands oily, but I like to know just what I'm letting myself in for before I start a job.

Well used to getting my hands oily, but I like to know just what I'm letting myself in for before I start a job. do it right and you dont actually get your hands oily but yep thats the one most of us have done. longest part and most expensive is replacing the gasket.

I know the part from the us is cheap, but it works and dose the same job as the other £50 jobie for a lot less, as all is needed is the sleeve to stop the tensioner traveling as far and hitting the basket, if yours is ok when you you get the bike and you don't hold the clutch in you should be fine. I had signs of this when i bought my rex with 4k on the clock and it had done over 20k before i fitted the mod just to be on the safe side, so don't go panicking

Thanks for all the replies. Methinks I'll order one of the sleeves from the US of A (just in case) but not rush into fitting it unless necessary.
