How much free space does a hard drive need to work efficiently. When does it start to bog down. So to the computry guys when do you start clearing out your drives. Ive got about 27% of freespace left on mine, have defragged it but it is still runnin quite slow.

You are OK at the moment. Defrag starts to get concerned when you are less than 15%. System resources start to really slow down when you have only 1 or 2 Gb of space left. Your problem is more likely spyware/adware or not enough RAM in the system

+1 on the defrag issue. When the system defrags, it basically writes the files (fragmented ones and unfragmented), one by one, to a new location, assembling each one into a contiguous file. It then deletes the original file and when sufficient space becomes available, writes them back intact. When the space on the hard drive gets low, the system can encounter difficulty finding space to copy large fragmented files into an unfragmented state and sometimes just bogs down trying to write, delete, rewrite, delete, etc until it can find the space to assemble the complete file. Computer processing can be slow if you don't have enough RAM to function properly. If there is insufficient RAM available to load the program and associated files, the system will have to access the HD and load portions of the program into RAM as it needs them. Hard drive access is always slower than RAM access, so that swapping and writing activity will slow things down.

I would triple check your laptop for viruses, spyware, malware etc and save your money for tyres

You could always just buy an external hard drive, they are quite cheap.
