One of the all time greats of motorcyle GP's, and a personal favourite of mine. Doohan was/is a gentleman off track, and a real gritty battler on it.
In 1992 a crash almost claimed his life, resulting in a badly broken right leg, which was surgically grafted to his left leg in an attempt by Doctor Claudia Costa to aid blood flow and speed recovery. His Rothmans Honda team engineered a hand operated rear brake system so he could continue racing!!
Doohan was 500cc Grand Prix world champion five times consecutively for Honda HRC/Team Repsol Honda from 1994 to 1998.
He managed 137 GP starts in 10 years
54 GP wins
95 GP podiums
58 GP pole positions
Order of Australia 1996
Australian Male athelete of the year 1995, 1996, 1997
Australian sports personality of the year 1998
Australian sports hall of fame honour 1994, 1995, 1996
Nominated for world sports awards of the century 1999
Most 500 GP wins in a season 12 1997
Most 500 GP pole's in a season 12 1997
Most 500 GP successive Pole's in a season 12 1997
Most 500 GP points in a season 340 1997
In 1999, a crash at Jerez, Spain at over 200kph, left him with a broken right leg, broken shoulder and broken left wrist. Doctor Costa inserted two plates and twelve screws into the right leg, and a plate into his left forearm. Ultimately his career was over through injury and he retired.
A pleasure to watch, and a true ambassador for the sport
