Xaus leaves after record-breaking lap. Ruben Xaus fastest during his first and last day of testing at Valencia.
The factory DucatiXerox Team may have been forced to withdraw from the Valencia test due to recent injuries for Troy Bayliss and Michel Fabrizio, but satellite rider Ruben Xaus kept the new 1098 on top by dipping under the official lap record on day one in Spain.
Returning to the scene of a memorable 2007 home win - the only victory by a satellite rider during the whole of last season - Xaus led a depleted field, containing seven factory riders, with a stunning time of 1min 34.265secs set on a qualifying tyre.
That placed the Sterilgarda Go Eleven rider almost 0.4secs under the official best lap time set during a WSBK weekend, by Bayliss in 2007, and a massive 1.1secs clear of nearest Thursday rival Max Neukirchner, of Alstare Suzuki.
Neukirchner was the fastest rider on race tyres, but just 0.055secs ahead of team-mate Yukio Kagayama - who made a highly promising return to action after a broken collarbone, sustained at the Qatar season opener, ruled him out of the recent Phillip Island round.
Fourth fastest on day one was WSBK rookie Carlos Checa, whose new Ten Kate Hondawas just 0.027secs slower than Kagayama as the Spaniard made an instant impression around a track he knows intimately from many years in MotoGP.
Checa's team-mate Ryuichi Kiyonari was fifth, 0.4secs behind the #7, with Regis Laconi the lead Kawasaki rider in sixth and just half-a-second behind Neukirchner.
The third Alstare machine, of Fonsi Nieto - currently second in the world championship standings behind Bayliss - made a slower start to the test with seventh on day one, almost 0.7secs from team-mate Neukirchner.
Lorenzo Lanzi was the next best satellite rider after Xaus, in eighth on his RG Ducati, while Makoto Tamada (PSG-1 Kawasaki) and Roberto Rolfo (Althea Honda) completed the top ten on a day of near perfect weather conditions.
Xaus will not be taking part in Friday's second and final day of testing, when the likes of Neukirchner, Kagayama and Checa will be aiming to beat his Thursday 'qualifying' time.
Xaus' team-mate Max Biaggi has been forced to miss the test altogether, due to a wrist injury, while Yamaha Italia elected not to attend.

Muggeridge puts privateer Honda on top.
With Ruben Xaus sitting out the second and final day of the Valencia test due to a shortage of engine parts, another satellite rider stepped into the spotlight - in the form of DF Racing's Karl Muggeridge.
2008 World Superbike Championship leader Troy Bayliss and Ducati Xerox team-mate Michel Fabrizio were forced to miss the test due to injury, as was Sterilgarda Go Eleven rider Max Biaggi.
Biaggi's team-mate Ruben Xaus, fastest on day one, did not ride on day two due to a shortage of engine parts.
With Yamaha Motor Italia electing not to attend, Alstare Suzuki, Ten Kate Honda and PSG-1 Kawasaki were the only factory teams present this week in Spain.
