While my tail end housing is solid, the mud guard/number plate has a small movement in it. I cant seem to find the nut n bolt that must be a loose. Any ideas

Too many stoppies have caused that mate. behave yourself. I've fixed this problem once for somebody else and had to remove the tailpiece to get at it. I can't remember the exact location of the offending loose/missing bolts but that should become obvious when you can see what you're doing. The one I dealt with had a LARGE movement caused by missing bolts. Yours are probably just loosened at the minute.
Just had a look at the exploded pics in the manual to remind myself. (Have you got a pdf workshop manual?) It looks as though the bolts are at the tail end of the frame, below the grabrail mounting points which does explain why the tailpiece had to come off to get at them.

Too many stoppies have caused that mate. Stoppies MICHAEL? .......... And we're going out for a ride together!!!!!! I thought we were going to have a gentle pootle out through the twisting countryside hills of Kent, :zzzz: admiring the scenery of the 'Garden of England', :zzzz: :zzzz: breathing in the fresh spring air :zzzz: :zzzz: :zzzz: and gorging ourselves on the fine feelings of satisfaction which come with biking, a mate and a few sherberts...... Instead, I'm gonna be checking my mirrors every five minutes in case you're flicking a stoppie, burning a do-nut, hoisting a third gear wheelie, or practising a stand on the nose cone salute as you sail by me!!! Today it's wrecking the tail end bolts on your beloved Rex.....but tomorrow it could be utter carnage!! I've just ordered a copy of 'Nutter bastard, speed freak Pt2' (£17.99 from WHSMITH or any good store near you), signed up for a Brands hatch 'Learn to stoppie like a god' intensive course, and am pawing over every page of Keith Code's 'A snap of the wrist-This time it's personal' book I'll show you.......

One of these days I'm gonna have to tag along with this pair of comedians just to see what REALLY happens. Truth is....we are going to meet up in our cars due to the arthritis which prohibits our riding these days.......I have baked a nice vanilla sandwich cake and Michael will bring along a nice piping hot flask of Earl Grey. We will sit overlooking the sea front at Southend, reminiscing on the 'good ole days' of biking and recounting tales of derring do on old Heskeths and oil dropping Triumphs of yore..........

I have already learnt one new trick which I bet MICHAEL doesn't know .....I can move to the rear of the Rex, lower myself carefully down from the tail end, hanging onto the newly fitted genuine Kawasaki rear luggage rack with re-inforced side mounting plates made of Kevlar ......and keep upright with a firm grip and a lot of determination. I can then pull my body to the side and re-mount the Rex in something akin to a vision of motion and poetry......... Of course that's with the engine off and the bike held upright by an Abba stand. ...but I plan to do it whilst moving next.......

Horizontal wheelies used to be my speciality, often accompanied by a triple somersault and pike for artistic merit. For some inexplicable reason I seem to have lost the knack of these in my old age. :jerry: Ahh the good old days.

. . . For some inexplicable reason I seem to have lost the knack of these in my old age. :jerry: Ahh the good old days. Yep, I seem to be forgetting how to effect "get offs" quite as frequently as I used to. Strange, ain't it? :headbang: Does appear to have the side effect of reducing the $$ I spend on repairs though!

Michael, I had same problem. Whole mudguard/taillight thingy became very loose (at about 6,000 ks) on one side. Pulled ducktail off and noticed a very small screw fall onto ground. There are 2 of these (one either side) and that's about all that holds that rear guard/taillight in place. Yet another item that was not tightened during assembly. (along with engine mounts, swingarm bolt, steering stem head nut, etc ... etc .. )

It would be prudent to apply a little Blue Loctite to all the fasteners back there. There seems to be a level of vibration back there that tends to loosen them. I did all of them shortly after I got the REX and have never had a problem with them loosening or going missing, but many others have.

I've never touched mine and so far <touches wood> everything is still where it should be.
Maybe the fact that I have shortened my rear muddy is taking some of the strain off and leddening the vibes.
Isn't the Canadian spec rear muddy, or do you call it fender over there, shorter to begin with?

Grem, Yes the Canadian stock "fender" is almost as short as the bobbed ones, so less to get moved around. When you shortened yours, did you remove it and reinstall, or just cut it in place. If you removed it and reinstalled, you may have tightened the fasteners up properly (like Kawasakis seems not to have in many instances) - or maybe you've just been lucky.

Maybe I've just been lucky then. I cut mine in situ. I've had the tail section off on several occasoions for one reason or another and never thought to check the other fastners in there. You watch, my rear muddy will come loose after I've just said that. :violin:
